THRIFT STORE
New Horizons Ministries moved to Canon City in 1999 to better fulfill its ministry of caring for children of the incarcerated. While the informed community fully supported the work of the ministry, the greater population of Canon City knew nothing of the work. As the work of the ministry continued to grow, the need for more financial support became evident. In 2005 the board of New Horizons Ministries approved the establishment of the thrift store division and the opening of a thrift store in downtown Canon City. In 2008 a second store was established in the Pueblo area. It soon became evident that the financial support raised through the work of the thrift store division was but a small part God’s plan.
Community Interaction
From the opening day of the thrift store, God began bringing opportunities to affect and influence our community. The day-to-day interaction with the locals and the occasional tourists has provided the missing link between the work of New Horizons Ministries and the local people. It has permitted the community to see past our “religion” and to see on a personal level the type of individual Christ calls each one of us to be. The stores have also allowed caring people of the community to support and contribute to our cause through their patronage of the stores.
Employment and Mentoring for “Moms”
As the ministry has grown, we have begun to see the value of the reintegration division. The thrift stores play an important part in getting the “moms” back on their feet again by providing jobs for them. Employment is perhaps the largest obstacle to overcome for a person reintegrating back into society after incarceration. We provide a professional work environment for them, while extending the extra graces sometimes necessary for them to acclimate back into the work world.
Youth Discipleship
Youth is an impressionable period in every person’s life. It is New Horizons Ministries’ desire to promote spiritual growth in young lives and help to develop biblical convictions that will last a lifetime. Making the decision to voluntarily give of your time can have a lasting, positive effect on your life. Volunteers have many opportunities to relate with customers on a social and a spiritual level. Working with other youth from different communities and backgrounds challenges youth and develops strong relational skills. Our staff is very committed to encouraging spiritual and personal growth in the lives of our volunteers. Wherever you find yourself, may you be encouraged to pursue the calling God has on you, whether it be in our field of harvest or in another area of ministry.
