New Horizons child care staff have the privilege of being the hands and feet of Jesus to an incarcerated parent and her child. We work primarily with the woman who finds herself incarcerated and pregnant. Many times she is also without family or loved ones who are able to provide care for the baby she is carrying. We begin to establish a relationship with mom while she is still pregnant by spending time with her in weekly visits.
Since April 1992, New Horizons has been picking up babies at the hospital nursery when they are only two days old. What an honor it is to take these little ones into our hearts and homes and love them with the love of Jesus and teach them His ways! We begin to give them a solid and healthy foundation, sharing the salvation plan and other Scriptures with them from this very early age.
Our purpose is two-fold, working not only with the child but also with his or her mother. Our greatest challenge is leading the mother to a life-transforming relationship with Jesus. Many of these women come from walks of life where they’ve never seen a life of faith lived out nor recognized the unconditional love of God. Oftentimes we find ourselves playing the role of coach, mentor, and cheerleader, not only for the child in our care, but also for the mother as she takes steps in making positive life-changing choices.
